Air Sampling for Lead Page 2
I.S. 306 X ATC Project No. 15-19125-0246
The established regulatory values for metals are intended for industrial workplace exposures and
are not generally applicable to office/school settings. There are no standards for this metal in
indoor air in non-industrial situations. The Environmental Protection Agency’s ambient air
standard for lead is 1.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air (1.5 ug/m^), this is a three-month
i) average. The sampling method used for these samples was an attempt to duplicate the EPA’s
method of sample collection as described on the EPA’s September 11* website. The lead in air
results reported there are from eight- hour samples.
H Yiannis Efstathiou and Herant Antonyant, Environmental Technicians from ATC’s New York
City office, collected the samples.
Results
The levels of airborne lead collected outside the building did not exceed the limits of detection in
any of the samples (<1.5 ug inb. Five (5) of the twelve (12) samples collected inside the building
1 exceeded the limit of detection (<1.5 ug/m’). Airborne lead concentrations in these five samples
were: first floor lobby =1.9 microgram per cubic meter (ug/nY). auditorium = 1.7 microgram per
cubic meter (ug/m'). gymnasium = 2.3 microgram per cubic meter (ug/m’). corridor A 4* floor
HVAC #11 = 2.3 microgram per cubic meter (ug/mY. and boy’s locker room = 2.3 microgram
per cubic meter (ug/m^).
ATC appreciates the opportunity to provide this indoor air quality service to the BOE. Please call
me at (212) 353-8280 extension 212 if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
