For the auditorium: ■ Shut down the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. • Given the size of the auditorium, erect a tent or plastic enclosure. • The technician should wear a respirator and a disposable protective suit. Set up a minimum of 5 air samples and analyze the samples using the EPA AHERA Transmission Eiectro.n Microscopy (TEM) method specified in 40 CFR Pari 763. Install fans and run them throughout the sampling period. ■ Using a brand-new standard commercial vacuum, vacuum the entire carpet area at least two times.

For the general office: • Shut down the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. Install critical barriers including sealing all the HVAC diffusers and grilles. ■ Remove furniture and items or cover with plastic. • The technician should wear a respirator and a disposable protective suit. ■ Install fans and run them throughout the sampling period. • Set up a minimum of 5 air samples and analyze the samples using the EPA AHERA Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) method specified in 40 CFR Part 763. ■ Using a brand-new standard commercial vacuum, vacuum the entire carpet area at least two times.

Outside the auditorium and general office

• Set up a minimum of 5 air samples outside the two test areas (such as in the lobby/hallway areas) and analyze the samples using the EPA AHERA Transmission Electron Microcospy (TEM) method specified in 40 CFR Part 763.

The other WTC.schools

Conduct this carpet testing protocol at the other WTC schools: High Schoo! for Econom.ics and Finance, High Schoo! of Leadership & Public Service, IS/PS 89M, PS 234 and PS 15CM.

Test Results

If the test results are satisfactory, the carpets do not pose an immediate health concern.

Long-Term Strategy

Carpets are a sink or reservoir for dust and particulate contaminants (including asbestos fibers, lead dust, allergens such as molds, dust mites, and insect parts, etc). Over the long-term there should be a strategy for systematically removing carpets in all school buildings and installing floor tiles or other similar nonwoven floor coverings.
