II. MATERIALS AND WORKMANSKIP A. Asbestos Cement Conduit 1. Unless otherwise specified or shown on the Con­ tract Drawings, all conduits shall be asbestos cement conduit (Type I) with a concrete encase­ ment. Concrete encasement shall conform to the requirements of Class "D" concrete as specified in Section 16030 of the Specifications. Conduit banks containing 5KV class cables shall contain a red dye or other distinctive marking as approved by the Port Authority. 2. Type I asbestos cement conduit shall be thin-wall asbestos cement conduit conforming to the re­ quirements for Type I conduit of the Federal Specifications for Conduit and Fittings; Asbestos Cement (for Electrical Purposes) (Designation: W-C-571), 3. Asbestos cement conduits shall be installed in true alignment and sloped for drainage wherever possible. They shall be coupled together by ap­ plying a thin coat of an approved asphalt base cement to the tapered surfaces of the end of the conduit and driving the joint tight by a method which will not damage the conduit or the coupl­ ings. At his option, the Subcontractor may sub­ stitute plastic couplings in which case the ce- nient may be omitted. The ends of asbestos cement conduit runs shall be sealed immediately after installation by means of paraffin-impregnated wooden plugs or by other approved means. 4. Flexible fittings shall be installed in all as­ bestos cement conduits crossing expansion joints, or firmly attached to independent structures. Except as otherwise specified, flexible fittings shall be similar and equal to those manufactured by the Johns-Manville Corporation. Asbestos ce­ ment conduit runs subject to motion in excess of the capacities of the standard fittings shall be provided with other approved means of compensat­ ing for the motion.
