RelmbursementHEP Avacs+.doc FYI: Re : Reimbursements (1) Here is the information we gave out to callers to the hotline re: reimbursement for HEPA's , A/C's + air purifiers from the Individual and Family Grant program. It's a FEMA funded program administered by the NYS Dept of Labor. There was some discussion a few weeks back about people who did not want a new A/C but wanted their existing one cleaned. We were told professional cleaning was a reimbursable expense. There has also been concern from the IFG that people who did not have A/C's would see an opportuntiy to get one so there was some discussion of having people take pictures of their existing A/C (don't think that idea went any where) . The limit per family is $500 for an A/C and professional cleaning at $250. This stuff tends to change so it may be different now. (2) For whatever it's worth, in my conversations with the people at IFG , I know they were concerned about FEMA requirements to cover the entire "disaster area" (about 10 counties including the 5 in NYC I think) so technically people miles away from Ground Zero would qualify. But maybe there's a middle ground between all five boroughs and below Canal. Folks in and around Chinatown have been consistently turned away for relief services if they live 2 feet above Canal St. so maybe Houston or Delancey makes more sense. The Lower Manhattan Development Corp has three zones for financial assitance and one of these includes Chinatown and part of the Lower East Side below Delancey St. (this is info they have proposed as of 5/22/02 - more info at www.renewnyc.com ) so perhaps the program could use those boundaries. (3) One more issue: the people who live in Al Smith Houses and other NYCHA buildings (Seward Park, LaGuardia) have been told of off and on as various financial assistance plans have been proposed that they would not be eleigible - not sure of the thinking behind that but I would strongly urge that we make sure these folks who tend to have the least resources not be disqualified.

DOH folks—Please note the HEPA vacuum, A/C, and A/C filter offer from DEC. Were you aware of this? If not, please pass along this information to community groups in impacted areas.
