03 DEFINITIONS AND STANDARDS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 DEFINITION OF TERMS:

1. Abatement shall mean any and all procedures physically taken to remove contaminated dust and debris from contaminated materials.

2. ACGIH: shall mean the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, 1330 Kemper Meadow Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45240

3. Al HA: shall mean the American Industrial Hygiene Association, 2700 Prosperity Avenue, Suite 250, Fairfax, VA 22031.

4. Airlock: shall mean a system for permitting entrance and exit while restricting air movement between a contaminated area and an uncontaminated area. It consists of two Curtained Doorways separated by a distance of at least three feet such that one passes through one doorway into the airlock, allowing the doorway sheeting to overlap and close off the opening before proceeding through the second doorwy.

5. Air Sampling: shall mean the process of measuring the airborne concentration of fungal spores, contaminated dust and asbestos fibers, in a known volume of air collected during a specific period of time.

6. Air Sampling Professional: the professional contracted by the Owner or by the Contractor to review and/or conduct air monitoring and analysis schemes. Air sampling, review and evaluation of results should be performed by an individual certified in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene (CIH) who has experience with air sampling. Other acceptable Air Sampling Professionals include industrial hygienists, air sampling technicians or air sampling technologists who have been trained in the selected methodology of sampling and analysis of contaminated dust. This individual shall not be affiliated in anyway, other than through this contract, with the Owner or Contractor performing the abatement work.

7. AN^: shall mean the American National Standards Institute, 1430 Broadway, New York, New York 10018.

8. Asbestos: The asbestiform varieties of serpentine (chrysotile), riebeckite (crocidolite), cummingtonite-grunerite, anthophyllite, and actinolite-tremolite. For purposes of determining respiratory and worker protection, both the asbestiform and non-asbestiform varieties of the above minerals and any of these materials that have been chemically treated and/or altered shall be considered as asbestos.

9. ASTM: shall mean the American Society for Testing and Materials, 100 Barr Harbor Drive, West Conshohocken, PA 19428-2959.

10. Authorized Visitor: shall mean the building owner and his/her representative, and any representative, of a regulatory or other agency having jurisdiction over the project.
