I wtcbackgroundacce ss5_.doc As suggested by Steve Levi, shouldn't the downtown sampling also test for other substances besides asbestos? What is EPA's justification for testing only for asbestos in the WTC area when it is conducting a more comprehesive test uptown? ---- Original Message---- * From: Levi, Steven Sent: Friday, June 28, 2002 2:53 PM To: Kahn, Lawrence । Subject: FW: EPA Background Study Consent Form

EPA is doing background sampling of apartments north of 79th street, the testing'calls for:

"Each sample will be analyzed for asbestos and lead. Wipe samples will also be analyzed for dioxins,. polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's), silica, calcite, gypsum, man-made fibers (such as ceramic dusts), and total dust. Upon completion of the analyses, EPA will distribute the individual sampling results to each volunteer."

I think the same protocol should be used in apartment near ground zero

Hi, Steve- The EPA proposes having participants in its background study sign the attached consent form. There is an accompanying fact sheet that I am trying to get my hands on and will share with you when I do. Any issues that concern you or are patently missing from the document? I believe DOH is having its institutional review board look this over as well. --Lee
