Re: WTC Environmental Assessment
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection determines the scope of the environmental assessments, determines whether levels exceed environmental standards, develops clean-up requirements and monitors the clean-up activities. The New York City Department of Health compiles and disseminates the data, and interprets the data for protection of public health and safety. The Department of Health makes the final determination regarding public health from environmental hazards.
Various Federal, State and City agencies have been functioning in a cooperative effort in order to effectively use resources and assist the public. Multiple agencies have been monitoring the environmental impact of the September 11,2001 tragedy at the World Trade Center. These agencies include the US Environment^ Protection Agency (USEPA), the US DOL Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), the US DHHS Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the ' New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH), the New York Cny Departments of Health (NYC DOH) and Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) among others.
Given the resources and the cooperative efforts to date, the USEPA should continue to provide support to the local agencies.
