Steven Levi, Esq Deputy Chief Torts Branch Office of the Corporation Counsel City of New York New York, New York
Dear Mr. Levi: As you are aware, following the events of September 11, 2001, hundreds of motor vehicles were removed from the vicinity of the World Trade Center to a location on Staten Island, New York. The reasons for doing so were evidentiary in nature. This included the possible recovery of human remains, securing of personal effects, recovery, if any, of airplane parts, and to j-i establish or determine ownership of the vehicles. It has come to the attention of the FBI that several individuals and insurance companies have requested the return of I
these vehicles. This letter will serve to inform the City of New kj York that the FBI has now -completed all of its examinations and has no further investigative interest in these vehicles. We also wish to inform you that in conjunction with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Federal Occupational Health Service Branch, certain tests were performed on a number of vehicles at the Staten Island location. At your request we have enclosed the testing results and related reports. We encourage the City to review these reports and consult with its own Departments of Health and Environmental Protection.
