2 Health Groups Head Downtown By Alan J, Wax STArfWEITEE Two health-related organizations with a strong in­ terest in air quality are moving their headquarters to lower Manhattan. The American" Lung Association and the American Thoracic Society plan to move 120 people from their current ofEces at 1740 Broadway atWest 56th Street to space at 61 Broadway subleased from a dot-com business. “We;.. are comfortable with the indoor air quality in our new office space at 61 Broadway,” John L. Kirkwood, the lung association’s president and chief executive, said.- Kirfcwood said the new space had been tested by independent industrial hygienists. “We have concluded that there is no contamination,” he added, noting that air quality at the new offices will continue to be monitor^. In addition. Kirkwood-said that while'“outdoor air quality has returned to pre-Sept. 11 background lev­ els, there is still need for substantial improvement.” The lung association, he said, is urging downtown residents and businesses to test and dean their own premises to be certain there, is no contamination from the collapse of the World -Trade Center. Area residents and workers have been concerned about the. air in their apartments and offices since clouds of dust swept through the area after the WTC buildings collapsed.
