The NYC financial district and the stock market were closed for approximately one week following the WTC disaster and over 13,000 businesses have been directly impacted. Consolidated Edison (“ConEd”) Substation in lower Manhattan was destroyed and four electric networks in lower Manhattan were shutdown. The natural gas distribution system in lower Manhattan was shutdown for at least a week after the disaster and Verizon lost service from the Operations Center at 140 West Street which affected 200,000 telephone caH’ ;., ^xcs, mostly in the financial district (Wall Street). George Washington Bridge was closed eastbound and Interstate 95 (1-95) traffic was disrupted for several weeks following the disaster. All bridges and tunnels in lower Manhattan were initially closed except to emergency vehicles. The Holland Tunnel was closed until October 8,2001; this restricted access to 1-78. Twelve New York City public and private schools in the area south of 14**’ Street were closed for at least a week following the disaster and one fire station was destroyed.
