REMAINING EXTERIOR RESIDENTIAL CLEANUP WORK UNDERWAY

(June 17, 2002) The cleanup of residui ind debris from building rooftops, facades and canopies is underway. The work, being done by Newark City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) contractors, follows a visual survey of approximately-4©&43uildings surrounding the World Trade Center (WTC) site. Of these, some 250 were found to have residual dust and debris needing removal. The owners of 20 percent of these buildings agreed to do the cleaning themselves, leaving about 200 buildings for the city to clean. EPA SHIFTS FOCUS TO INDOOR AIR

With the recovery efforts at Ground Zero and the Staten Island landfill drawing to an end, EPA has stopped its sampling of pollutants associated with the World Trade Center fires. The Agency will continue to monitor for asbestos related to the debris handling in lower Manhattan and at the Fresh Kills landfill for a week after the recovery work officially ends. Outdoor sampling has generally shown no presence or very low levels of pollutants in recent months. The fires have been out for months, recovery activities are almost completed, the barge operation is shut down and our sampling generally shows that air quality in lower Manhattan is back to normal levels experienced prior to September 11.
