ALTERNATIVE WORK ARRANGEMENTS The capacity of theCity's streets to handle pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic is finite. It is impossible to increase the roadway capacity Carpool / Park & Ride enough to handle all of the travelers normally handled by buses and Walking / Biking Ferry subways. Thus, we encourage the use of other strategies to limit the number of overall trips in and around the City and spread out trips Taxi / For-Hire w u- , Vehicles throughout the day to better utilize the times outside of the peak travel Trains/Rails ® hours when the streets have excess capacity. These strategies include: I Telecommuting: Working from home removes a person from the daily i commute. Many workers can take advantage of computers, mobile phones and the Internet to utilize teleworking.

I Staggered Work Hours: Staggering work hours spreads the trip Bus Layover Provisions generation more evenly throughout the day, which assists with alleviating Alternate Work Arranp the rush hour stress on the roadway network. Utility / Construction Private Garages Compressed Work Week/Flex-Time: Compressed Work Week and Flex time options, which are currently available to many employers and employees, should be utilized in order to reduce the number of trips an individual needs to make. Employees and employers could change the work week to consist of four ten-hour days, or employees could work weekends and take days off during the week.

Alternative Work Sites: If employees are able to work closer to where they live they may be able to commute by walking or bicycling rather than using less desirable options such as driving a personal vehicle. The fewer commuter trips which must be made into the Manhattan core and the shorter the remaining trips are, the less the demand will be for street and sidewalk space.
