Once again we are at the same position we have been in each of the previous years. The OT cap has been reached and the Haz Mat staff is not getting paid for the overtime they are required to work. We filed the extension requests in January and three months later have not received approval. This is a yearly exercise which consumes everyone's time and effort, and which is replayed each year to the same conclusion. It would be advantagious to everyone involved to skip all this and start the year with the 50% cap in place.
The Haz Mat unit responds to all sorts of hazardous materials incidents, including acts of terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction. It is unconscionable for the department to expect these individuals to respond at a moments notice at all hours of the day, and at possible risk to their well-being, without at a minimum being paid for their efforts in helping to protect the citizens and environment of this city.
