of grease traps. The Department opposed this portion of the bill pertaining to plumbers but testified that we would consider some reporting mechanism for routine maintenance by the establishments and one that was amenable to the restaurant industry.

Monthly Grease Inspections As of February 6, 2001, 1829 restaurants have been inspected in thirteen target areas, resulting in 1327 Commissioner's Orders issued, requiring the installation of 2717 grease traps, and 97 notices of violation were issued for failure to maintain grease traps. Additionally, DEP reinspected 989 restaurants resulting in a 92% compliance rate.

Reconstruction and Closure of New Croton Dam Spillway Bridge We were notified by the design firm under contract for the reconstruction of the city owned bridges in the east of the Hudson watershed that there appeared to be unanticipated movement detected in the base of the arches of the New Croton Dam Spillway Bridge. Upon learning this information we immediately ordered closure 01 the bndge and notified local authorities. A police post was implemented until more permanent barriers are installed. The Design engineering firm of Hardesty and Hanover reviewed the situation at the site and determined emergency repairs need to be initiated. Their report has been received and the bridge will have to remain closed for

Emergency Response

8 Inch Water Main Break - Union Turnpike and 129th Street; Queens On Monday morning February 12, 2001, Central Communications received a report or a water ieaK in the intersection of Union Turnpike and 129th Street in Queens. DEP personnel responded and found a street leak with water flowing through joints in the roadway surface. The amount of water was minimal; however, it was causing an icy condition on Union Turnpike and on the Grand Central Parkway which runs parallel to Union Turnpike at that location. The DEP crew called for assistance and initiated a shutdown on the 8 inch main in Union Turnpike between 126th Street and 132nd Street, which is one block, and no consumers were affected. DEP personnel excavated over the leak and repaired the broken water main. Water service was restored at 2:30 p.m. and the restoration of the roadway was completed early the following morning.

Interagency Matters

Meeting With State and City Health Departments A meeting was held between representatives of NYCDOH, NYSDOH and DEP to discuss the transfer of certain public health engineering programs from the State Health Department to the City ea th Depa men . it was generally agreed that the transter ot responsibility would take time and would be dependent upon hiring and training. Of significance was the tact that during the meeting NY SDOH agreed that the City's Cryptosporidium Action Plan was less problematic to them then they previously believed, and that they would very likely approve it. The Action Plan specifies the detailed actions to be taken if certain levels of the waterborne pathogen Cryptosporidium are
