At 4.0% per year, the after-tax proceeds from these
additional death benefits (net of $10,000 as assumed burial
costs) could generate, before taxes, at least $6,000 per
year in additional investment income.
Possible Losses of Family Income
One possible loss of family income could occur if the
New York City Police and Fire employee had been earning
income from part-time (or full-time) non-City employment.
Another possible loss of family income would occur if
a spouse working outside the home would no longer be able
to do so.
A possible loss of future family income would occur if
the employee, in the future, would had been interested in
and successful at applying for and being promoted to higher
ranks and salaries.

Additional Information
As noted earlier, Appendix A provides a summary table
of statistical information for POLICE and FIRE as of June
30, 2000.
Appendix B presents an example and discussion of the
individuality of the economic differences that can exist
amongst the families of deceased Uniformed Public Safety
Police and Fire employees.
The example in Appendix B is shown to emphasize that,
although there may be averages, evaluation of the resources
and needs of families are as unique as those families
themselves and any evaluation thereof should be done on an
individual basis.
