Mr. Bud C. Larson September 25, 2001 Page 4

Annual Wage-Related Income after Line-of-Duty Death

• Fire Pension Fund Benefit $ 30,000 • General Municipal Law ("GML") a

Section 208(f) Benefit* 30,000

Total Pension $ 60,000

• Wife Wages $ 30,000

Total Family Earnings $ 90,000

•total inclusive of any Social security benefits payable.

This illustration demonstrates that relative to the wages earned prior to the death of the employee, the benefits provided to the family survivors by the City and State. of New York would be at least as much.

In addition to wages, most families earn income on their savings and investments. Upon death in the line of duty, the spouse of the deceased receives various lump sum death benefits that, after death-related expenses and taxes, may be invested to earn additional investment income.

For the hypothetical 35-year Firefighter herein, killed in the line of duty, the following, approximate lump sum death benefits would be payable:

• Fire Pension Fund $ 40,000* • Mayor's Office Benefit 60,000 • Fire Life Insurance Fund 8,500 • U.S. Government Benefit 151,635 • Contract Benefit 25,000

Total $285,135 •Estimated amount of refund of member contributions and Increased-Take- Home-Pay ('ITHP') Reserves.
