Department of Mental Health ($ in millions) The aftermath of the World Trade Center terrorist attack has caused significant psychological trauma to individuals throughout New York City. Anecdotal evidence from the voluntary not for profit providers has revealed that while the attack will undoubtedly have significant impact on those directly affected, it has also disrupted treatment regimens for many in the City who were already undergoing mental health treatment.

The number of people affected is expected to be in the thousands. Treatment will vary with individuals and will have to be tailored to meet their clinical needs. Conservative estimates of the numbers impacted follow. Actual expenses may be significantly higher.

Number of WTC Employees 30,000 Conservative estimate of the number impacted @ twice the # of employees 60,000 Estimated counseling sessions per the following schedule @ $100/session

50 % need at least I counseling session 30,000 50% $3 25 % need at least 3 counseling sessions 15,000 25% 5 15% need at least 6 counseling sessions 9,000 15% 10 % need at least 12 counseling sessions 6,000 10%

Additional Group therapy sessions may be necessary for school children and families. While some individuals, particularly those directly affected are likely to suffer trauma for a long time, those costs will become clearer in the coming months. Presented above is a very preliminary and conservative estimate of the short-term costs.
