The approach used by IT QATS in evaluating the NYC data involves a systematic series of steps.

The Predefined HTML Output and 'Hot Map' results for select analytes are also printed for review and data entry in customized spreadsheets. • The data in each spreadsheet are first sorted by media, detected results, and result concentrations to determine the number of detects and whether they are present in significant concentrations. • If there are a large number of detects by media type, the data are sorted by address and sample collection date to establish concentration versus time. • Summaries of analyte characteristics including the numbers of samples collected by media type, number of detects, concentration range of detected analytes, method detection limits (MDLs), unusually high concentrations, etc., are recorded. • For analytes of interest to EPA, or those with elevated concentrations, graphs are created illustrating trends of concentration versus time by location, and linear trend lines are plotted. • Analytes of a particular class are evaluated for correlation, and graphs are plotted. Correlation statistics for multiple analytes are calculated and trend plots are prepared. Regression analysis for benzene at the two WTC Tower sites has also been performed.
Other factors, such as weather conditions or potential quality issues, are evaluated and discussed if they appear to be relevant to the observed results.
