RE: Missed Elevated Exposure Notification
Ray,
In reviewing our past air sample results, I was not able to verify that the elevated
exposure below was confirmed to the contractor. This sample was collected on
2/15/2002. It was a metals sample on a burner.
The exposure was reported in the weekly summary report delivered at the site safety
meeting of 2/26/02, but I was not able to locate the individual sample notice that should
have been sent to you for distribution to the contractor.
The contractor who should receive this notice is:
• Mazzocchi Wrecking
The following elevated concentrations were measured on a Torch Cutter North of Tower
2 site:
• 1500% of the shift adjusted OEL for lead.
• 278% of the shift adjusted OEL for arsenic.
These high results may have been the result of burning in the area where the main
chiller plant was located. We know the blue paint on the chiller components contained
about 15% lead.
Because these levels were so high, I looked back at the exposure history of this
particular worker. This information is in the attached spreadsheet. There were three
other lead samples collected on this person. None of these other three showed
excessive concentrations, however, one sample was about 78% of the shift adjusted
exposure limit. There were two other arsenic samples, both of which showed arsenic
levels which were too low to quantify. Based on this data and similar exposure data that
we have collected on other burners, it does not appear that this worker has been
habitually exposed to excessive levels of metal fume.
I apologize for any inconvenience the late reporting of this result has caused.
