Re; Air Sampling for Mercury Vapor P. S. 89M ATC Project No. 15-19125-0297

Dear Mr. Orlan;

ATC Associates, Inc. (ATC) is pleased to provide this letter report of air sampling for mercury vapor conducted on February 21, 2002, at the referenced school. The New York City Board of Education (BOE) requested this sampling at the recommendation of Environ Corp., a consultant to the parents association.

Scope of Work

ATC collected four (4) samples for mercury vapor using Carulite® (Hydrar) tubes connected to battery-powered sampling pumps calibrated to collect 0.2 liters of air per minute. One (1) sample was collected indoors and three (3) were collected outdoors.' The samples were sent to PSC Analytical Services, Inc., an American Industrial Hygiene Association-accredited laboratory in Reading, PA. One blank tube was also submitted. Analysis was performed by means of a mercury analyzer according to NIOSH Method 6009. A copy of the analytical report is attached.

The sampling locations were; L‘ floor hallway by the outside cafeteria, playground (north), playground (south) and roof.

Wagdi Abdelshahid and Tenzin Namgyal, Industrial Hygienists from ATC’s New York City office, collected the samples.

Results

Mercury was present in only one sample (#Hgl, floor hallway) at a level greater than that found in the blank. When blank-corrected, the Hg concentration in this sample falls to 0.000017 mg/mV which is just slightly greater than the limit of detection. The Hg concentrations in the other three samples were less than that found in the blank. ,

These results indicate that the Hg content is a random contaminant of the sample tubes and not the result of ambient levels of Hg vapor.
