Asbestos present but No Indication of an asbestos hazard

Dear Resident,

The New York Department of Health, with the assistance of the U.S Public Health Service and the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), conducted environmental sampling in your home on Results from the tests for asbestos are attached an further explained below. This sampling was conducted to determine if asbestos fibers from the WTC collapse have entered residential buildings in the surrounding area. Your home was one of two residences tested in your building. Samples were also taken from outside of your building and at least one hallway or lobby in your building. You will receive a report of all of these findings at a later date. This letter is to convey your individual results only.

One dust sample and one air sample from your home were analyzed for asbestos from {room/area/. The dust in your home, collected by vacuuming, did contain asbestos fibers. [Summarize results] Other types of fibers were seen in the dust in your home including fiberglass and cellulose (see attached summary of results). However, the air sample collected over a 4 hour period in your home did not indicate any fibers as analyzed by Phased Contrast Microscopy(PCM). Although there are some asbestos fibers in the dust of your home, no airborne fibers were found indicating no health hazard at the time of sampling.

Although there are traces of asbestos in the dust of your home, it does not pose a health hazard at this time. The amount and nature of the dust indicates a low potential for significant airborne asbestos from the dust in your home. Additionally, the air sampling, conducted while your air conditioner was running, shows us that no asbestos fibers are in the air of your home. {Add comparison to background samples when available/ Although not recommended at this time, you may wish to have your home cleaned. If so the attached guidelines should be followed.

Other dust and air samples were taken in your home to check for silica and other minerals which may be irritants. We have not yet received those results from the laboratory. We will forward those results to you as they become available.

Thank you for allowing us into your home to conduct this sampling. Your participation is allowing us to answer public health questions important to all of the residents of lower Manhattan. Please give us a call if you have any questions regarding these results.

Sincerely,
