Dioxin refers to a group of chemicals created when many types of materials burn, rt is also created during so ne types of manufacturing and incineration Dioxin does not break down easily, remains in the environment and can he distributed by wind and water, l| is found tn a wide variet/ of places. People are exposed to dioxin primarily by ealmg meat, dairy and fish The burning of building and office debris al the World Trade Center is causing some emi.ssions nt diexin. Most of tile air samples taken in areas surrounding the work zone and analyzed for dioxin have been below EPA’s screening level, which is set to protect against significantly increased risks of cancer and other adverse health effects The screening ’ Legend level is based on an assumption of continuous exposure for a yearfo an average concentration of 0 16 nanograms per cubic meter (ng/m3) The unit ng/m3 is the mass of dioxin/furan compounds in nanogram? (a billionth of a gram) per I Fuel Al Slacons cubic meter ot air Because ftie vast maini.ty of individual as well as Ibu average measured dioxm levels have been ,owcr ; Pu.ldinys J" Op-^n ? iP> IS than the scrconing level, EPA does not expect an increased risk of health protdems as a resu't of dioxm b.inr; emitted from the World Trade Center site. 1 . \ / Due to the extremely low levels of Dioxins found at ttiese monitoring stations, bar charts depicted in green have a range of O.fO to 0 004 ng/iti3. This range is well below E^A's screening level of 0 1G ng/ni3 EPA does not expect any N increased nsK of health problems due to these low levels.
