13.0 SAMPLING AND ANALYTICAL METHODS 13.1 ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING
A. OSHA Method ID-191 is a polarized light microscopy (PLM) and central stop dispersion microscopy method for the determination of asbestos fibers in bulk materials. B. An analytical method for identification and quantification of asbestos using polarized light microscopy and phase contrast optical microscopy has been developed. This method can quantify asbestos in a bulk matrix at the 0.1% concentration level within a factor of two with 90% probability (Schneider et al, 1998).
13.2 AIR
A. NIOSH Method 7400 (Issued 8/15/94, 4th ed.)is a phase contrast light microscopy method used primarily for estimating asbestos concentrations in air. Use this method in conjunction with electron microscopy (e.g. Method 7402) (Chemsoft, 1996). B. NIOSH Method 7402 (Issued 8/15/94,4th ed.) is a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) method for the determination of asbestos fibers in air. This method is used to determine asbestos fibers in the optically visible range and is intended to complement the results obtained by phase contrast microscopy (Method 7400) (Chemsoft, 1996).
