Project: Treatment of Ground Water for the Removal of MTBE Location: World Trade Center, New York Client: Moretrench American Corporation Date: January 9, 2002

Process Flow Description

This system has been design for the anticipated flow rate of 350 gpm.

The source of the water requiring treatment is from the sumping operation required to maintain a dry excavation of the former World Trade Center

Anticipated pumping duration is twelve months

Discharge to the combine sewer system is regulated by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Wastewater Treatment. A sample of the discharge has been tested and the results are attached. The contaminate of concern is MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) which is a gasoline additive. MTBE is highly soluble in water and therefore difficult to remove.

Major System Components and Function (Additional detail is attached)

Influent Equalization Tank

This tank is 8 feet in diameter, 11 feet tall and has a capacity of 4,000 gallons. This tank provides an 11-minute retention time. The purpose of this tank is to reduce flow surges to the treatment plant by equalizing flow. The tank is constructed of Linear Polyethylene and rated for industrial use. The water is pumped from this tank by a Duplex Pumping System.

Duplex Pumping System

The pumps to be provided are manufactured by Aurora Pump and are rated for a flow rate of 350 gpm at 110 feet of head. The specific model number is 340/360-encl-3600 with a 4x4x7b impeller. The break horse power is 17.0 however we have installed a 25 hp motor so that the pumps would be suitable for additional flow from the well system if required. A duplex pumping system is provided so that one pump is available in the event of pump failure. Throttling valves and pressure gages will be provided. These pumps convey the water through a bag filtration system.
