Good News! ERA, FEMA AND CITY EXTEND DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR DOWNTOWN CLEANUR AND TESTING RROGRAM

FOR RELEASE: Tuesday, October 2, 2002

(#02107) New York, N.Y. ?The U.S. Environmental Rrotection Agency, in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the City of New York, today announced that it will extend the deadline for lower Manhattan residents to sign up for assistance until December 28, 2002 to give downtown residents more time. Under the ERA World Trade Center Residential Dust program, Manhattan residents living below Canal, Allen and Rlke Streets may ask to have their homes cleaned and/or tested for airborne asbestos by certified asbestos contractors.

To date, 1100 people have requested testing and 4159 have asked for cleaning and testing.

For more information about the program or to sign up for the program, residents can either visit ERA'S web at www.epa.gov/wtc or call ERA’S toll free hotline at 1-877-796-5471 or (for hearing impaired) 1-800-396-1018.
