One of the multi-agency groups that continues to meet monthly by conference call is the EPA/DHHS/DOL Environmental
Assessment Work Group. One of the groups we used to participate in got folded into this one. The monthly call was
today. I'm sending you Harold's notes to see if you agree with what he understood. {1 was on the other call dealing with
the Queens school.) I assume you ail are aware of these activities.

HIGHLIGHTS
1) EPA MONITORING
a) CLEANING EFFECTIVENESS STUDY- Pilot program going on OK. Heavily contaminated apartments used. Some
preliminary results show cleaning effective
b)Background Study- Difficut getting people to sign up . They wanted 14 buildings -not yet -only a few. These would be
above 79th Street. Ths is considered more research and NYCDOH's IRB needs to approve.
Interior program- Scopes of work going out any day ~3500 apartments. Cleaning and sampling requested by 75% and
about 25% requesting sampling only Next week they intend to start samplin ~100 apartments.
The list of contaminents of concern include more than asbestos
fiberglass
lead
PAH
dioxin
this list will go out for peer review soon.
Lead is a concern because the default used for air may be low (0.1 ug/m3). They are having difficulty getting below this.
Mercury vapor not a concern
DATA MANAGEMENT
The final update was mid-July when polycyclic aromatics were added.
DEP’s asbestos sites are now on their web page.
They will only update postings if they get new or cleaned up data.
**A cd-rom is going to be put togrther with all government ambient data. They will be calling all agencies to very
correctness before using data. You and Barbara are the DEP contacts.
The web sites list the requests for assistance now. They have ~3773 requests for service.
Residentail Sampling Report
It is in final stages of review by top level management. They are hoping for an end of month or early September
release. Agencies may get a copy by tommorrow for a quick review for major problems.
