When Market Square Arena was imploded, it was a city event like no other. There was a monsterous dust cloud. Montel Giden who was watching with thousands of others says people were choking and gasping for air. Giden said he wondered if there was something harmful in the dust.
The city of Indianapolis was also thinking about the dust. The city’s Capital Improvement Board hired a company to test the air during the implosion. The results of the tests have caused an explosion of their own.
"It (the report) was poorly done in terms of what should have been looking for and two it did a poor job of comparing what the true underlying risk was," says Tony Havics, an environmental engineer the I-Team consulted. Havics is an asbestos expert called in on major jobs like the World Trade Center. Other experts the I-Team consulted agree with Havics. They say the CIB asked for too little to determine if the dust was truly dangerous. Then the CIB kept the results secret for nearly six months.
Another board, the city's own Air Pollution Control Board had been asking for the results since MSA came down. Air Board member Bruce Wallace got fed up. "There was this huge dust cloud when we imploded the thing and there were air samples taken during that time and after that time and there was a report written. What does it say? asked Wallace.
