Based on the above. Initial worker exposure evaluations will be conducted for the following landfill
gas constituents;
Methane.
Hydrogen sulfide.
Aldehydes.
Benzene and other volatile aromatic hydrocarbons.
Vinyl chloride and other volatile organic halocarbons.
Other constituents as deemed necessary based on information obtained regarding
the composition ofthe Staten Island landfill gas entering the gas treatment system.
4.3.4 Other Chemical Agents
It is possible that other chemical agents maybe present in the debris being brought to the site for
handling and processing; however their presence is not anticipated to be signifcant in the overall
WTC waste stream. However, limited exposure assessments may be performed on select
constituents, particularly those that are detected at “Ground Zero”.
Metals can be present as unique particles originating from painted material as well as metal-
containing material. The transfer and handling ofthe debris may result in the generation of airborne
metal dust, some of which may be respirable. Due to the non-homogenous nature of the debris, the
risk of metal exposure will constantly fluctuate, and therefore, a monitoring program should be
developed and enacted for the duration ofthe project.
Numerous organic compounds may be found in the debris as a result ofthe fires, both before and
after the WTC building collapses. While this class of chemicals does not readily form gasses, they
can become airborne through the physical handling process of contaminated materials.
