05HA SAMPLING RESULTS SUMMARY AS OF 10/18/01
Asbestos: A total of478 ah monitoriag samples for asbestos have been taken. From 9/13 *9/22,
177 samples were taken in foe fininoial district They were taken on OSHA personael
as they walked witiun certain pnedetenoised zcoes, Results revealed asbestos
eoncennations rauriag from 1^ to .037 free., well below OSHA's psimisaTble
' exposure limit (PH.) of .1 free.
After 9'22, sampiiag focused os foe rabble pile (foe keystone area of foe map) where
32 of 210 samples exceeded OSHA's limit via PCM analysis. However, upoo forfocr
analysis using diseximinating counting methods aad/or TEM analysis, foe number of
asbestos fibers found droppM dtamsUMlly to below detectable levels or well below .1

Carboa Moaoxide: Thirty one personal ssunple? for woikers on the nibble pile showed results rangmg
from 1 ppm to 34 ppm well below the OSHA SO ppm permissible exposure limit
NoisB! OSHA has been conducting noise monitoring io die rabble pile (die keystone area of
die map). Three personal saraplas have been conducted on employees performing (or
working near) various derations such IS jackbaramering. Employee’s expoBuro to
noise ranged from 88 dBA to 89 dBA. OSHA's pcanisswle noise exposure limit for
construction is 90 dBA
Saica: As of October Ithe overwhelming m^'oiiiy of the 159 silica samples show no
detestable levels of airborne siliceL ’Die highest sample result was approximately twice
the OSHA limit, whereas the next hipest level was less than half or bus limit. Both of
these levels were found on personnel woddng in the rubble pile, an area where OSHA
continues to encourage ths use of respiramry protection.

Compouads! As of October 16*. OFHA has taken 120 sample for volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) such as acetaldehyde, scrylmitrile, acrolrin. beozeas. 2^utanone,
chlorodlphsnyl (FOB), dioxin, sfriyl benzene, formaldehyde, hexone, isocyanates,
percbloroethylent, r^eae, toluene, trichloroefoylene, vmyl chloride and xylene.
Screening sarcples iiutially showed elevaied levels of some organic chsmioals resultmg
from foe fires bunting in the rubble pile. Subsequent personal samsles at breathing
zone level and am Eamples show worker ejqjosura levels to be below OSHA limits.
However, one personal sample result for benzene was found at foe 8br OSHA
allowable limit concentration of Ippm. This exposure was found on a backhoe operator
moving debris on foe pile.
Metals: OSHA has taken 218 air samp les to monitor worker exposures to dusts, fumes,
oxides, and other compounds of metals such as antimony, beryllium, ohromiuin.
cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, vaoadiutu, zinc,
cadmium, ma^esium, arsenic, and mercury. Results from these samples are
^orally well below foe applicable OSHA limits. However, torch cuttiag and
burning structural steel at foe pile have resulted in instances of over-exposnrt as
follows: copper (6); iron oxide (6): lead. (1); and cadmium (3). Accordingly,
OSHA is rscommanding that work^ engaged in these operations continue w
wear impropriate respiratory proteodon.
Other Analysis; OSHA has sampled &r dioxin, isocyanates, polysttdeated aromatics and oxides of
