1. DEP doesn’t issue permits. Building owners are required to submit notifications when they
conduct an asbestos project (which includes clean up of asbestos containing material). Since 9/11
DEP received a total of about 34 notifications from the WTC area.
2. All the jobs for which notifications were submitted were inspected at least once during the clean
up. DEP also responded to all the complaints.
3. DEP conducted survey of about 450 buildings. During the survey DEP inspected the exterior
surfaces such as roofs, facades, setbacks, etc. for visible debris from WTC. About 211 of the
buildings contained varying amount of WTC debris.
Based on our request to building owners for information regarding the interior air and bulk
sampling DEP received responses from 269 building owners. Following are the results.
