Brookhaven Energy’s Proposal
On June 25,2001, Brookhaven Energy filed an application with the Siting Board to
obtain a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need under Article Xto
construct a 580-MW generating facility. According to the company's application, the
proposed project site is located at the southeast comer of flic Long Island Expressway
(LIE Exit 66) and Sills Ecad near the hamlet of Yaphank in the Town of Brookhaven.
The project site is 21 acres and is located in an industrial zone near the North Bellport
Economic Envelopment Zone.
Brookhaven Energy states that it selected the site for several reasons. It is an industrial
zone and is surrounded by commercial and industrial properties. Electric transmissiwn
lines are adjacent to the property; a natural gas pipeline runs along the LIE immediately
nnrth of the site; water and sewer infrastructures are located within the immediate
vicinity; and, the site is surrounded on all sides by open corridors, such as highways.
