Between 1994 and 1998, through a variety of education and disease management programs, the rate of revisits by asthma patients to HHC emergency rooms declined significantly. The rate of pediatric asthma revisits declined from 5.90% to 4.63% and the rate of adult asthma revisits declined from 10.20% to 9.09%.
• Between 1994 and 1999, the number of children receiving their essential immunizations increased by 3%, from 94.80% to 98.02%.
Utilization Trends — Since 1994, HHC has had to adapt to external forces, including changes in reimbursement and the growth of managed care, that have had an impact on the organization and delivery of health care services. HHC's successful response to these forces is evidenced by the following:
• The total number of discharges/admissions has declined from 235,621 in FY94 to around 214,000 in FY99, a drop of 9%.
• The number of beds in operation in HHC facilities declined 28%, from 10,512 beds to 7,604 beds.
