Emerging Issues
Millennium Gas Pipeline DEP has been reviewing the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC's) Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SDEIS) on the Millennium gas pipeline. DEP has been reviewing plans for this proposed new pipeline for more than a year. Throughout the process, DEP has consistently voiced concerns regarding the pipeline's proximity to water supply aqueducts and, in particular, a proposed crossing of the Catskill Aqueduct at the Bryn Mawr Siphon (near Yonkers, NY). DEP will be generating comments on the SDEIS in order to update and clarify the City's concerns. FERC, in response to DEP's earlier comments, has recommended an independent engineering assessment of the proposed aqueduct crossing. A public hearing on the pipeline will be held on April 9th in Ossining, NY. DEP staff will attend the hearing and plans to read comments.
Water Power: Conference for Educators On Thursday, March 22nd, I provided the welcome address to over 100 New York City and watershed educators who participated in "Water Power," the first-ever conference on the New York City water supply system and watershed issues. "Water Power" was made possible by a grant to the City Parks Foundation (CPF) from the Catskill Watershed Corporation's (CWC) Public Education Grants Program.
