DEP Employee Receives Award from US EPA, Criminal Division / On December 11, 2000, Mr. Carlstein Lutchmedial, of DEP's Asbestos Unit, was recognized at an award ceremony given byljS EPA, CriminalDivision. Mr. Lutcbmedial was given mis award for '15c valuable assistance and significant contributions to rneTrrission of the Criminal Investigation Division." Pataki signed legislation initiated by the City which grants DEP Police the status of "police officers" within NYC. Up to this point, DEP Police only had the status of police facers outside ot me Lity, whkh hampered DEP's ability to use its own police force to provide security at key water supply facilities within the City. The Hudson Riverkeeper and the NRDC had vigorously opposed enactment of this legislation, claiming that using DEP Police within the City would significantly weaken watershed protection.
