Lower Manhattan Crisis Center. Through our private bar connections we may be able to establish a new temporary assistance center in lower Manhattan near the site of the crisis for the benefit of individuals whose businesses were or are located there, and who come into the area seeking help of all kinds. Obviously, if the City is establishing an emergency center, we would be pleased to be part of it along with other service organizations.
Pro Bono Services. The Legal Aid Society's pro bono relationships with the private bar have already generated many calls offering legal assistance to survivors. They are looking to us to take the leadership to organize them to usefully assist. Our proposal includes conducting triage on the issues that come to us, referring clients in need of fuller interventions to private attorneys who would take their cases on a pro bono basis under the auspices of The Legal Aid Society.
The Legal Aid Society has a unique capacity to provide comprehensive assistance to families and entrepreneurs who otherwise will have to attempt to handle an array of problems piecemeal at a time of overwhelming grief and pain. We hope to be able to make this valuable contribution in the way we are best skilled to help this City and aid WTC survivors to begin to reassemble their lives.
