GOVERNOR PATAKI PROPOSES "REBUILD NY-RENEW AMERICA" PLAN TO HELP NEW YORK RECOVER, REBUILD & REVITALIZE

Seeks Up to $54 Billion in Federal Assistance for New York's Disaster Relief, Economic Revitalization, Working Families & Security

Governor George E. Pataki today unveiled a comprehensive $54 billion plan to "Rebuild NY - Renew America" that calls on the Federal government to continue to assist New York's businesses and working families to rapidly recover from the devastating September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.

"The attack on the World Trade Center was not just an attack on New York and New Yorkers, but an attack on all of America and on every American," Governor Pataki said. "This was not only an attack on our freedoms and the American way of life, but an evil attempt to cripple the American economy by striking our nation's financial capital New York City.

"During these last few difficult weeks, New Yorkers and millions of compassionate and caring Americans have come forward to offer unprecedented support and assistance to those most directly affected by these tragedies. Through their efforts -- for which we will always be grateful -- the spirit of New York and the spirit of America has been renewed.

"Now we must make restoring the strength of the New York economy one of our top priorities, and, to do that, we must rebuild our nation's financial capital. As we have seen throughout the entire history of our nation, when New York and its economy succeed, America and the American economy succeed.

"Since September 11, President Bush, with his extraordinary leadership, and Congress have been unwavering in their support for New York -- not only immediately meeting every request we had to respond to the immediate emergency, but also moving quickly to approve $20 billion in federal aid, Governor Pataki said. "This realistic and balanced package, developed in partnership with Mayor Giuliani, is a comprehensive proposal that will lift our economy, help working families and renew New York and America. I look forward to working with President Bush and our Congressional leaders to send a powerful message around the globe that our nation's economy is strong and the American way of life will never succumb to the forces of terror, hate and intolerance."

The Governor's Rebuild NY-Renew America plan, developed in partnership with Mayor Giuliani and with input from business, labor and elected officials, includes three key categories of Federal assistance that would dramatically help New York City and New York State recover, rebuild and revitalize, including:

Basic Rescue, Recovery, and Rebuilding Support for New York; Economic Recovery & Revitalization Assistance for New York's Economy; and, Support for New York's Homeland Security Efforts. .
