Despite the problems at Cantor that Lutnick mentioned, some observers thought
these events should not have been enough to force Iris Cantor to withdraw
his late in the game.
Why then did she? Jeffrey Taufield, a spokesman for Iris, offered the following
statement: "At the end of the day Iris felt eery strongly that the risks
associated with a prolonged and potentially disruptive battle for control
were not in the best interest of the firm, its customers or the Cantor
family.
In a pre-approved press statement, Iris Cantor was magnanimous in her praise
of Lutnick, the man she only moments ago accused of betraying her husband,
and fraudulently seizing control of the firm: "Despite past disagreements,
let me say that Howard Lutnick has always been devoted to Bernie and the
firm: I am confident that Howard will successfully lead the firm going
forward... This will ensure the perpetuation of the firm and its name, both
of which are consistent with Bemie's wishes."
