PSI Project Number. 622-1A139
Dear Mr. Miller:
At the request of the Dormitory Authority State of New York, Professional Service Industries,
Inc. (PSI) has been directed to perform periodic environmental testing at the Borough of
Manhattan Community College's, South Building, North Building and the temporary Trailers located
at the West Side Highway adjacent to a staging area for WTC structural steel removal. This report
covers the results of testing performed on January 26th, 2002.
Monitoring performed on 01/26/02 included testing for Airborne Silica, Respirable Dust, Total
Dust and total Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).
Based on the methodologies described in this report, this assessment revealed that, at the time of
testing, measured parameters were generally within recommended guidelines. Airborne Silica,
Respirable Dust, Total Dust and total Volatile Organic Compounds levels were within
established guidelines.
Testing results follow.
Air Sampling for Respirable Dust & Silica
PSI collected 7 representative air samples on January 26th, 2002, one from each of six of the
Trailers and one from a nearby outside area. Samples were collected and analyzed by NIOSH
Method 7500 to determine ambient or background airborne nuisance dust and respirable silica
concentrations. Respirable dust concentrations ranged from <0.004 mg/m3 to 1.1489 mg/m3,
which are well below the OSHA limit of 5 mg/m3 and the ACGIH limit of 3 mg/m3.
Respirable silica was detected in two (2) samples and below the Analytical Sensitivity of the
measuring instrument in five (5) samples. Concentrations detected were; 0.0149 mg/m3 in
Trailer #107 and 0.0236 mg/m3 in Trailer #109, both of which are below the NIOSH limit of
0.05 mg/m3 and the ACGIH limit of 0.1 mg/m3.
Analytical results are shown below in Table 1.
