B.M.C.C. Page 5 Dust & VOC Levels December 6, 2001 0.5 ppm, when the outdoor levels were 0.0 ppm. At present, no single organization develops guideline concentrations for indoor air contaminants nor are values available for all contaminants of potential concern. A number of organizations offer guideline values for selected indoor air contaminants. These values have been developed primarily for occupational settings and, in some cases, for residential settings. The values for individual VOCs are generally in the range of 5 ppm and above.

The portable trailers have just recently been installed for use in this Fall semester. Typically, new trailers will off-gas some detectable levels of VOCs for a 4 to 6 month period. Normally, TBE would recommend high levels of outdoor air to help "flush out" a trailer. However, due to concerns about the quality of the ambient air, we do not recommend this approach at this time. Even the highest levels detected on December 4th (1.5 ppm in one trailer) are not considered very elevated, and over an additional time frame of 3 to 6 months, the VOC levels in the trailers should drop to background levels.

Sincerely,

John A. Tiffany, President, TBE
