Rudy: More Donations Are Needed By Stephanie Saul . staff WHTER Despite hundreds of millions in donations pledged to charity groups, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani yester- day urged people to keen giving to assure secure fu tures for the families of World Trade Center victims, “It's not as much money as you think,” Giuliani I said at a regular news briefing yesterday. More than $600 million has been pledged to an estimated 146 charities in the World Trade Center relief effort,' with many of the pledges made by major corpora tions. Giuliani pointed out, though, that some of that money will never be collected. “Pledge, pledge, pledge, pledge . . . people pledge a lot of money, and then it turns out there is a lot less,” Giuliani said. “Let’s say your goal is that the families are finan cially secure, that the children can go to school, can go to college, because they’ve lost their father or in some cases their mother,” the mayor added. “A lot of money has been donated, but certainly not enough During yesterday’s briefing, the mayor also down- I played a report in The New York Times that a turf [' war over control of the distribution of charity is de veloping between him and Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. “People are just dying to go back to turf wars. There aren’t going to be any turf wars,” Giuliani said. ; That story followed an announcement by the may- or’s office on Monday that it would host a meeting to , coordinate the work of charities. A similar meeting , had been held last week by Spitzer, who is develop ing two databases — one a listing of charities and a , second, confidential, list of those who have received , funds. The idea of the second list is to evenly split up J the money. Despite the apparent conflict between the two offic-' - es, a spokesman for Spitzer said yesterday that they “ were working in tandem. “I think there was some confusion,” said Darren . Dopp, the Spitzer spokesman. “ . . . There were re ports in the media that we were at odds. We didn’t think we were, but we’ve sort of confirmed that, In- I "deed, weT^nofi” '
