9.0 PERSONAL PROTECTION 9.1 SUMMARY
A. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING - ERG2000 (SUBSTANCES (LOW TO MODERATE HAZARD)) - GUIDE 171 1. Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). 2. Structural firefighters' protective clothing will only provide limited protection. 3. Reference: ERG, 2000. B. Asbestos dust is highly toxic and a confirmed human carcinogen by inhalation. When the limits of exposure to asbestos dust cannot be met by limiting the concentration of dust in the workplace, the employer must institute a program of respiratory protection and furnish protective clothing to every worker exposed to asbestos dust (ACGIH, 1991; Lewis, 1993; Lewis, 1996; Sittig, 1991). C. Avoid breathing dusts; wear a positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus. Do not handle broken packages unless wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Wash away any asbestos which may have contacted the body with copious amounts of water or soap and water (AAR, 1996).
