Re: Wipe Samples for Polychlorinated Biphenyls &
Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons
High School for Leadership & Public Service
90 Trinity Place
New York, New York
ATC Project No. 15-19125-0290
Dear Mr. Orlan-
ATC Associates Inc. (ATC) is pleased to provide this report of the results of the wipe samples
for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) collected
on January 2, 2002, at the referenced location. The New York City Board of Education (BOE)
requested these samples to evaluate possible contamination in the school building.
SCOPE OF WORK
Tenzin Namgyal and Wagdi Abdelshahid, Industrial Hygienists of ATC’s New York City office,
collected the samples.
The samples were collected using stenle gauze pads and hexane as a solvent. The solvent was
provided and samples were analyzed by PSC Analytical Services, Inc. (PSC), an Amencan
Industnal Hygiene Association-accredited laboratory in Reading, PA. The PCB analysis was
performed using EPA Method 8082B. The PAHs were analyzed by EPA Method 8270C .
The samplmg was performed consistent with generally accepted industnal hygiene practices.
There were inherent limitations created by constraints of time, operational and work practice
vanability, variations in contaminant concentrations, and sampling and analytical accuracy. The
results of the sampling represent conditions found on the dates the samples were collected.
WIPE SAMPLING RESULTS
ATC submitted eight samples for PCBs and PAHs to PSC for analysis. A blank was also
submitted A copy of the laboratory report is provided in the Attachment. Samples were taken
from surfaces throughout the building. The sample area for each wipe sample was 100 square
centimeters (100cm2).
