dete.j?mined) . Kelly has suggested removing the asbestos (hence fiber glass also) in settled dust health criteria altogether because of the lack of established criteria, an idea which we should also consider.
I am leaning towards the use of an asbestos in air criteria (0.01 f/cc) alone based upon a cancer risk of 1x10 (4) for a one-year exposure duration that Mark Maddaloni proposed some time back, however, I am completely unfamiliar with the Millette k factors - and if any settled dust criteria at all is used, let it be based upon background levels only.
My sense is that this will take a while to settle and that the EPA is leaning towards using the k factors unless anyone presents a compelling reason why they should not be used. The primary compelling reaon may be that we might be establishing a dangerous health precedent for asbestos in settled dust based on "experimental criteria".
Your comments/thoughts on this are welcome. It was established that DEP needs to participate in next Monday’s call - that will be our chance to further discuss this with the PIC group - or at this Thursday’s meeting.
