Using landfill for WTC debris exposes Islanders to unhealthy air 1 I am a resident of New Springville and I ani alarmed and outraged at hearing the mayor an; nounce in his news conference that the debris froni the World Trade Center is being dumped in the Fresh Kills landfill. * Regardless of the sorrowful circumstances which occurred [Sept. 11] (my wife and I were unfortunate to be too close to the action, but very fortunate to e^ cape without physical injury), I find it appalling that, after reporting that the debris is laden with asbestos, that it was being dumped uncontrolled in the Fresh Kills landfill. TV shots show the trucks leaving the disaster area without any covering over the dump* sters. This same debris will be dumped uncontrolled into the Fresh Kills and into our air. « We fought through the terror of yesterday’s disas^ ter, having to combat smoke, debris and unsafe cow ditions. I do not wish to die a slow death from air coni tamination. The mayor nonchalantly made thj statement, which I am sure was not heard by many residents of Staten Island. Calls to the borough presil dent, Department of Sanitation and to the mayor went unanswered or were answered with the T don’t know’ reply. This has got to be stopped.
