Most of those involved in the day-to-day cleanup probably won’t suffer any long-term health ' effects, however, particularly if they use protective gear and try to avoid the most polluted zones. The most common health prob­ lems include sore throats, burning eyes and aggravation of existing conditions like asthma, sinus prob­ lems and hay fever. Some people may develop a con­ dition call^ “reactive airways disease syndrome” (RADS), an in­ flammation of the windpipe that may cause chronic coughing or other irritation. For some of those afflicted, the symptoms may per­ sist for years. Fine airborne particles may pose the greatest risk to people’s health. Recent studies suggest that the tiniest particles can pene­ trate deeply into the lungs, poten­ tially aggravating existing health conditions and contributing to lung disease. Dr. Smith said a number of sim­ ple precautions can limit people’s exposure to potentially hazardous pollutants. First and foremost, he said, those working in the rubble should wear respirators, if they have them. And they should ap­ proach enclosed spaces carefully, assuring proper ventilation to di^ sipate any gases that may have built up. People exposed to the debris should wash — not brush or shake — the dust from their shoes and other hard surfaces at the end of the day. And they should find a way to remove dusty clothes be­ fore going into their homes. Those with pre-existing respira­ tory problems should be particu­ larly careful, staying indoors whenever possible, said Dr. Smith.
