Dear Mr. Mayor:
I was greatly disturbed by the enclosed front-page article from the Sacramenia Bee concerning a New York City pollution hazard which, to my knowledge, has yet to be addressed by the EPA or other local health authority in the aftermath of the Sept 11* WTC disaster.
Analysis of a sampling of NYC air, obtained last October, revealed the presence of an extraordinarily high concentration of lethal, miniscule, particles, according to Thomas Cahill, professor emeritus of physics and atmospheric sciences at the University of California, Davis (UCD). The particles are said to be so tiny that (to quote from the article) it would take 1 billion to fill the period at the end of this sentence. As such, they cannot be filtered, but instead travel like gas and can enter the lungs and the bloodstream and invade the heart. They are said to pose a major threat to people with lung and heart conditions. ----------- - --------- -
I am surprised that what made front-page headlines in Sacramento, CA. more than a month ago, is not common knowledge in New York where the hazard allegedly exists. Perhaps some new information has surfaced that contradicts the UCD findings. But if not, I would strongly urge you, Mr. Mayor, to have this situation investigated and guidelines issued.
