Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Air and Dust Sampling Results from the World Trade Center Area

f- February 8,2002 — The New York City Department of Health and ATSDR release air and dust sampling results from the World Trade Center area in lower Manhattan. Low levels of asbestos and fibrous glass are among the materials that have been found in dust samples taken fi-om residences and from the common areas of residential buildings in lower Manhatten.

To prevent these materials (which could be harmful if inhal,ed) fi-om becoming airborne, ATSDR urges residents and building owners to continue to clean fi-equently using wet cloths, wet mops, and HEPA vacuums while wearing a dust mask and rubber gloves.

Asbestos was not found at levels of concern in residential air samples. Analysis of other possible airborne contaminants contained in residential area samples is still underway.

While the World Trade Center cleanup continues, ATSDR is recommending additional air and dust monitoring of residential units in lower Manhattan. For more information on the sampling and cleanup recommendations, please visit the NY Department of Health web site emuk The full report entitled, "Report on Residential Air and Dust Sampling in Lower Manhattan" is available in PDF or HTML.
