Fire union officials are urging ■ the city to have all of the emer gency vehicles that responded to the World Trade Center profes sionally decontaminated. The fire department has exam ined the 200 rigs that survived the terrorist attacks; several tested positive for asbestos and were de contaminated, officials said. But the majority were cleaned and returned to service, and union leaders charge that they still pose a health risk to firefighters. Fire Department officials said an independent consultant tested .the trucks and found no health ' risk, and that full-scale decontam- , ination is not necessary. . But Uniformed Firefighters As- i' sociation officials said they were concerned that the Environmental Protection Agency had decided to destroy hundreds of private vehi cles recovered at the site that had tested positive for asbestos. “We have a lot of guys with res piratory problems and they are riding around with all kinds of dust in the rigs,” Thomas Manley, ;a union health officer, told The - New York Times, “There is no doubt that some of it’s asbestos.”
