Asbestos Air Monitoring Data

This table shows how much asbestos EPA measured in the air at this site, on the dates and times shown. Daily summaries of this data and how it compares to the level of concern for public health are provided on the EPA home page.

EPA can measure asbestos in several ways. For these data tables, EPA is providing measurements in terms of the number of asbestos structures found per square millimeter within our air monitors (structures can include single, overlapping, and bundles of asbestos fibers). The level of concern for asbestos is based on continuous exposure to more than 70 structures per square millimeter for an extended period. Because cleanup efforts will reduce asbestos levels dramatically over the next several weeks, EPA does not expect people exposed to this amount of asbestos to have increased risks of health problems.

Measurement (structures/square ! Date Time millimeter) 12:01 a.m. to 12:00 9/30/2001 not detected p.m.

9/29/2001 88.9 a.m. 9/29/2001 DUPp2:01 am to 12:00 29.6 j p.m. 12:01 a.m. to 12:00 9/29/2001 not detected i p.m.

9/28/2001 not detected p.m.

9/27/2001 14.8 a.m.

9/27/2001 not detected p.m. 12:01 p.m. to 12:66 9/26/2001 not detected a.m. to 12:00 9/26/2001 14.8 p.m. 2:66 p.m. to 7':d6 9/25/2001 not detected p.m.

* This reading exceeds the EPA benchmark. It may not indicate increased risk, however, because these are "snapshots," rather than long-term exposure measurements. Weather and recovery activities at the World Trade Center can cause temporary variations in asbestos levels that affect these snapshots.
