West Nile Virus Activities On Saturday, August 12, the Department announced that two residents of Staten Island tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) at the New York City Department of Health's laboratories: a 64 year-old woman living in Great Kills, Staten Island, who became ill with symptoms of meningitis on August 4, and was admitted to a local hospital on August 6 and a 63 year-old man living in Willowbrook, Staten Island, who became ill with symptoms of meningitis on July 31, and was admitted to a local hospital on August 5. On August 11, the CDC confirmed West Nile virus in the 78 year-old Staten Island man whose illness was announced on August 4. On Friday, August 25, the Department announced that an 87 year-old woman from Borough Park, Brooklyn was admitted to a local hospital for a surgical procedure .on August 7 and developed encephalitis on August 15, and an 84 year-old woman from Shore Acres, Staten Island, who became III with symptoms of encephalitis on August 18, and was admitted to a local hospital on August 20 have tested positive for WNV. On August 30, the Department announced that a 52 year-old man from the Graniteville section of Staten Island who became ill with symptoms of meningitis on August 15, and was admitted to a local hospital on August 18, had also tested positive for West Nile virus. With the exception of the Brooklyn resident and the 87 year-old Staten Island resident who are still hospitalized, all others are at home recovering. The laboratory results were obtained by tests performed at the New York City Department of Health's laboratories, and specimens have been sent to the U.S.
